NFTV: Web3 TV Network that’s Old School MTV meets Adult Swim

As NFTs continue to innovate in cultural industries, a new network – NFTV – is seeking to give the power of TV creation to those who enjoy it. Greg Cipes, a well-known voice actor and musician, will be using a DAO to bring in user content and projects from major TV and film names.

NFTV Co-Founder Greg Cipes is an entertainment industry veteran

Greg Cipes certainly knows a thing or two about the film and television industry. Because he has been involved in the industry since childhood, Show business is a family affair. His grandparents were actors and his father was a producer of television. Cipes learned the ropes quickly because of this.

His long career has seen him pick up over 150 credits as an actor. Most people know Cipes best as the voice of Teen Titans’ Beast Boy on Nickelodeon and Michelangelo from Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Now, Cipes is getting ready to launch NFTV. After first learning about NFTs via the Bright Moments DAO, Cipes and Lukas Haas began the project together. Cipes first learned about NFTs at the start of Covid-19, when some friends told him about the technology. It was a great way to empower creative communities and connect with fans.

Indeed. In an interview with NFTevening, Cipes explains the ultimate goal for the project. “NFTV is by the people for the people. “The goal is not making money, although that may be the case.” Instead, Cipes wants DAOs to allow more control over the content they see.

Crypto, Cartoons & Cannabis: The NFTV mission

Something that Greg Cipes highlights about NFTV is what he calls the three C’s: Crypto, Cannabis & Cartoons. This is a key factor in Cipes’ three passions and the ethos for the new network. Cipes believes that all three industries have the potential to disrupt the world.

Greg Cipes describes NFTV as “MTV – but it was cool – meets Adult Swim.” Cipes also calls it “ADD TV” because of the diverse mix of short-form content Cipes envisions the DAO greenlighting.

NFTV is a hybrid of traditional entertainment networks and the user-generated content model social media platforms have made popular. Cipes notes that this is by design, and reflects the demographic that NFTV is primarily catering to, saying,

“This is really for the young generation, the Gen Z’s, to have content from a network that isn’t run by billionaires and oligarchs.”

How will the DAO work?

While NFTV will be built on Ethereum, the current plan is to stream its content on Twitter and YouTube. This will make NFTV content easily accessible to the public. By the same token, while Cipes acknowledges that he has a vision of what the platform could be, he assures that “Every step will be decided by the DAO”.

To enable this, the DAO will have a governance model using tokens to distribute votes among members. The DAO will also issue airtime tokens to people who watch NFTV content. The DAO membership tokens are not yet available. The goal is to make them affordable for everyone.

To be sure, the road to launching NFTV has been challenging. Cipes discusses how his vision for NFTV helped him keep going. Even though it was extremely difficult.

“It’s been a heavy lift for me to get to NFTV. But whenever I thought about stopping, I thought, Well, somebody else is going to do it and it’s not going to be as good! And whenever I kept going, I saw that the universe liked that.”

All in all, like most creators who are early Web3 adopters, Cipes hopes that NFTV will also serve as an example to other creatives to take control of their art and empower their fans. Our interview ends with his advice for creators who are trying to navigate this new space.

“My advice on getting started is to just start! Go to the edge of the cliff and jump off.”
